Bocca Lorenza cave and the route “A leap into the past”

Bocca Lorenza is a natural cave, about 36 metres deep, located on the southern slope of Mount Summano, at a height of 386 metres a.s.l. It became famous from an archaeological point of view from the early twentieth century thanks to random finds which were followed by systematic excavation campaigns. The oldest finds (fragments of pottery, flint, bone, horn) date back to the late Neolithic. They highlight continuity of frequentation in particular as a place of shelter for shepherds. Inside, in the Eneolithic period, a hidden cavity full of stalagmites was used to lay the body of the deceased accompanied by a funerary kit including some copper axes now preserved at the Naturalistic Museum of Santa Corona in Vicenza.
The site is located in a large forest clearing above the Lesina district.
It can be reached on foot through paths of medium difficulty.
Journey time: about 30 minutes.
For visits inside it is necessary to be accompanied by an expert guide.
